just picking up this thread from my brief on-line research when I googled I was able to determine that the surname Dick (as a last name)has origins & meanings as follows:-

As a surname, Dick is the 1,513rd most common name in Great Britain with 6,545 bearers. Although found in every part of Britain, the form Dick is especially common in Scotland, and it was from there, in the 17th century, that the surname was taken to Northern Ireland [1].

Also it has the following meanings:-
Scottish and English: from a short form of Richard. Although found in every part of Britain, the form Dick is especially common in Scotland, and it was from there, in the 17th century, that the surname was taken to northern Ireland. that is repeated

German and Jewish (Ashkenazic): nickname from Middle High German dic(ke) ‘thick’, ‘strong’, ‘stout’, or in the case of the Jewish name from modern German dick ‘fat’ or Yiddish dik.

German: topographic name for someone who lived by a thicket or patch of thick undergrowth, from Middle High German dicke, a special use of dic(ke) ‘thick’.

North German: from a short form of a Germanic personal name Theodicho, formed with theud ‘people’, ‘race’

Hi Robert from London!

Tim answered the question about his ancestry in his latest jourmal entry. Look here!
http://www.timallen.com/journal/entry.php?id=35

In German the word dick is still in use and as you stated it means thick, fat, swollen, stout etc.
So when I say "Ich bin zu dick." I'm stating that I'm too fat. Wink

Nashville, huh? It's the partner city of Magdeburg where I was born.
My family name is very common in Czech Republic (Where my ancestors came from) but not in the Pampa! Laughing

Hi, Hasepup, oh, ok I didn't see the journal before I posted I guess that could have saved me some time(Doh!).

I like the Scots fine people, I have some friends up there too(I know some of the dean clan). Actually I went to a wedding recently in Scotland where quite a few men were wearing kilts which I suppose are rather fetching on reflection.

(Ja, Ich bin zu dick auch, Ich esse gern alles!)

thanks for the response and have a great weekend
robbie

Ich bin so dick, dass man mich am Strand für einen gestrandeten Wal hält. Laughing

Hey, my location says GERMAN Pampa.... Formerly known as GDR!!! Laughing

My weekend was... well... a weekend. My man had to work. I went to the election office (and we get to keep Angela "Aaangiiiieeee" Merkel Confused ) and afterwards I got a new haircut... so that saved the day 4 me.
