Tim, many of the post offices here in Austria have closed already, especially the small ones on the coutryside. The post office employees are being retrained as office workers for the police, it keeps the policemen on the streets instead of doing the paperwork behind the desk. I can see the crime rate falling with this idea.

Bermudagirl - that's a really good idea that the Austrian post office and police have implemented! Something I think could work in New York City as well.

Tim - it's always good to hear from you, and it's good to hear that you and yours are well!

Our little Pampa post offices were closed long ago. Now I get to "travel" a lot when I need a post office... Thank goodness for online stamping and printers!!!!

I like the example of the post office you've given. I have an inkling that health care could operate a lot like that in a socialized manner. The biggest problem we face in capitalism is that we've developed a habit of acceptance for the openly ruthless and very questionably ethical/moral/legal practices of many of the corporations. This would normally careen into a philosophical solution I've been developing, but I don't want to derail this thread for that when I can go to the philosophical section and do it there.

All in all, it's nice to see sensible opinions on this than ideological agendas getting pushed as it typically does.

Sorry to hop in so late but I just thought I would respectfully suggest using another entity other than the Post Office to make your point. The Post Office does not receive a dime of taxpayer dollars. The postage you pay fully funds the Post Office. It is the only Federal program that does not receive our tax dollars. Also, on a side note, most people don't realize that when they use Fed EX or UPS they are in fact using the Post Office. Certain types of mail/packages that you take to UPS or FED EX are in fact given to the Post Office for delivery. The Post Office and the other two companies mentioned have struck business deals. Respectfully, the wife of a Postman Very Happy
