Hey Tim and all of you who are interested in CERN,

as a big fan of you "Home Improvement" show I just stumpled across your website and your thoughts about quantum theory.

I was especially delighted about your words about CERN. Unfortunally your fascination for high energy physics is not too common among most people. I think it's great of you to promote it, because it is indeed one of the most interesting and challenging fields of science.

If you were at CERN back in 1999 when the LEP accelerator was still in operation, I guess you didn't have the chance to get into the caverns and tunnels where the actual magic takes place Wink

As I am a computer scientist working on the ATLAS project at CERN, I had the opportunity to get down there some weeks ago, so maybe you enjoy these pictures I took and which I want to share with all of you.

During operation cavern and tunnels are closed because of the high level of radiation...

This is a view down into the ATLAS cavern, where actual particle collisions will take place. The depth of this pit is 130m!

This is a picture of the actual LHC tunnel, where accelerators will be installed until 2007...

This is where LHC tunnel and the ATLAS cavern (the cavern holding the biggest detector named ATLAS) finally meet.

A construction worker (I guess this guy would be worth a special "Tool Time" show Laughing ) admires the intrinsic complexity of the ATLAS magnet system.

Hope you all enjoy these pictures,

Ingo
