Is anyone else familiar with motes - or SmartDust? http://computer.howstuffworks.com/mote.htm Basically - they are small units, theoretically as small as dust particles, that are actually complete sensing devices that can swarm, gather information, and relay information back to a central database.

I see the future of science as not expanding to explore the universe "out there," but shrinking, to discover the universe "in here."

If you could use them yourself, what would you use them for?

OK - this branch of science has inspired me with a movie idea for Tim.

Tim manages a small laboratory for a technology company. Working in a lab means long hours. This has created strain at home. His wife resents it. His teenaged kids seem like strangers.

And one day, something happens. Tim opens up a bubble in the universe and gets zapped into another dimension. Not only does no one see him, he's also the size of a micron and he discovers a whole new universe at this dimension. Think "Horton Hears a Who" except the Who is Tim.

At this level, Tim discovers new life forms - other "people" who are only microns tall. There's a whole universe in a microchip!

Tim's quest is to find a way to bring him back to the world of his wife and kids. The only problem is, Tim meets a Micronette who wants him to stay with her. She believes that only Tim can save their world from extinction.

In the meantime, Tim's teenaged son, through snooping through Dad's lab, has discovered that his father is now the size of a micron. Maybe he spots Dad in a microscope - who knows? Dad's just glad that someone knows he's been zapped into another world.

At first, Tim Jr is ecstatic. He uses Dad's car without permission. He uses Dad's secret cash stash on beer and parties with his friends. After a couple of weeks of giving poor ol' mom new gray hairs, however, it gets old, and Tim Jr. lets mom and sis in on what happened, and they have to try to help get Tim back without the neighbors, the cops, etc thinking that they're all crazy.

So - how does it end? Who wins the tug of war between the Micronettes and Tim's family? Does he save the microchip world? Do Tim and his family start to appreciate each other more? Does Tim decide to stay with Ms Micronette and start a new life? Only Tim knows for sure.
